Uganda celebrates as Mama D sets new cooking record

In a culinary feat, professional chef, Dorcus Bashema Kirabo, affectionately known as Mama D, made history this week by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest individual cook-a-thon. This unfolded at her Zoe's Cakes n Bites in Kira Division, where Mama D's cooking marathon gathered fans and well wishers for days.

Mama D commenced her journey on December 10, setting her sights on surpassing the previous record held by Irish chef Alan Fisher at 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds. As the clock struck a few minutes past 10 am on Thursday, December 28, Mama D not only shattered Fisher's record but went on to extend her cooking marathon for an additional day, making history with an impressive 144 hours of continuous cooking.

Clad in a vibrant green apron branded with the name of her condiment sponsor, Royco, Mama D's dedication and resilience were met with cheers and applause. Although Royco played a supporting role, Mama D made it clear that her record-breaking journey was a result of unwavering determination and the support of numerous partners.

Between December 23 and December 29, Mama D showcased her culinary prowess by crafting an impressive 121 different meals, ranging from traditional Ugandan dishes like kigere, rolex, pilau and beans to more complex delicacies like Katogo, offals, beef, and chicken. The versatility of Royco variants was on full display, ensuring each meal was a tasteful masterpiece.

Wangechi Gitahi, the Category Marketing Manager at Unilever Uganda, the makers of Royco, expressed pride in Mama D's accomplishment, stating, "She is an inspiration, and we are proud of her." Gitahi highlighted the alignment of Mama D's ambition with Royco's brand purpose of giving the community the 'Strength To Do More.'

Mama D's record-breaking achievement not only puts her in the spotlight alongside other notable Ugandans with world records but also showcases the country's resilience and determination on the global stage. As Mama D awaits official acknowledgment from Guinness World Records, her exceptional feat continues to resonate, proving that when ambition, skill, and community support come together, extraordinary records are made.
