Speaking to ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos last week, Bobi Wine and his wife Barbie Itungo revealed that news of the nomination found them in hiding.

At the time, Bobi Wine and other opposition leaders had organized citywide protests over the bad roads in Kampala. Uganda then was playing host to scores of world leaders for the NAM/G77 conferences.

The security agencies reacted by placing him and fellow leaders Dr Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago under house arrest until the end of the conferences.

Bobi Wine, however, managed to beat the blockade and flee his home.

When the news of the nomination came out, he said, he was in hiding together with his wife who had also managed to flee from the Magere home.

“It was interesting because she had actually succeeded in getting out of home and had found me in my hiding place,” he said.

Both he and his wife, he said were filled with emotions and “cried tears of joy.”

When the news was broken to us we screamed, forgetting that we were in hiding….it was a mixture of emotions, tears of joy.”

Luckily, he said, shortly after they got the news, the government security forces also lifted the house arrest.

On her part, Barbie said her hope for the movie is that people of the world “will see what is happening in Uganda and understand that people of Uganda are working hard to regain their democracy.”
