Representing the Chief of Defence Forces, the Chief of Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Jack Bakasumba, commended the delegation for choosing Uganda for their case study.

He assured them of continued efforts to bolster the friendship for the development of both nations.

The General emphasised the importance of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) being a pro-people army, stating, "For us, we believe that people are the biggest tool, and whatever we do, the civilians are the foundation; that’s why we’re called the Peoples’ Army."

Gen. Jack Bakasumba noted that despite the UPDF being relatively young, it has made significant achievements in Uganda and across Africa.

Uganda has contributed to regional peace efforts in countries like Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and subscribes to peace mechanisms such as the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF).

Air Vice Marshal Manish Kumah Gupta, head of the Indian delegation, explained that their visit to Uganda is part of a study tour aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the country.

He mentioned that learning about Uganda’s history, particularly through President Museveni's book “Sowing the Mustard Seed,” has been insightful.

The longstanding relations between Uganda and India are highlighted by the significant role Indians play in Uganda’s economy, especially in manufacturing, trade, and banking, which provide numerous employment opportunities.

Additionally, Indian military officers conduct training for UPDF personnel both in Uganda and India, enhancing the capabilities of the UPDF.

The meeting was attended by several senior UPDF officers, including Maj. Gen. Henry Matsiko, Brig. Gen. Alex Olupot, Brig. Gen. Godwin Karugaba, and Brig. Gen. Abdul Rugumayo.

The meeting between Gen. Jack Bakasumba and the Indian delegation underscores the mutual commitment to maintaining and enhancing the strong ties between Uganda and India.
