Although the firebrand activist is remembered in her heydays for advocating for divorce and other extreme measures such as the castration of male sex offenders, Matembe says modern-day women are better off living harmoniously with men.
Matembe no-longer supports divorce
Today, she advises women to resist the urge to divorce their husbands, unless their marriages turn violent.

“I don’t want you to say that Matembe is preaching the message of rejecting men,” she said on Thursday.
“You see me here, I have been married for the past 48 years to one man, and God blessed me with four biological sons. In my house, gender imbalance was 100 per cent.
“So, how could I hate men when they are the only ones I have in my family? All I hate is demeaning and minimizing a girl or a woman." she said.
Tips for women in offices
Matembe was delivering a lecture to a group of female workers at Jubilee Insurance Uganda in Kampala, ahead of today’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
Regarding divorce, Matembe encouraged women to be patient, noting that "...marriage is a long journey with rivers and deserts and many other challenges. What you must do is remain firm and hang onto the positive things about your man, unless he beats you. If he beats you, you run away.”

During the lecture, Metembe also shared tips to corporate women about complementing one another rather than tearing each other down. She also advised against indecent dressing and overreliance on social media.
Carrying the women's flag
At the event, Dorcus Kuhimbisa, the Jubilee Insurence Uganda Chief Operations Officer said they organised the lecture to remind their female employees about where Ugandan women have come from.

“Women need to realise the difference between what was and what is today,” she said.
“We also want to ask them to carry the women’s flag in the insurance industry, and to remind other women on how to lead responsible lives.”
This year’s International Women’s Day is being celebrated under the theme; “Inspire inclusion.”
