This was revealed in an official statement dated Friday, July 28, 2023, which was issued by the Ministry on its official Twitter handle.

"The Ministry of Health has received clearance to deploy medical interns to 58 medical internship centres across the country. Subsequently, the ministry of Health has released a deployment list of the interns under revised terms as guided by the government. The delayed deployment was caused by factors beyond the Ministry’s control," the statement read.

The statement further revealed that the Government will deploy a total of 1,901 medical intern students who will receive a monthly net allowance of sh1,000,000 to cater for accommodation, feeding, and transport.

It should be noted that medical interns have been on strike since the year began, demanding that the government deploy them for internships.

While appearing before Parliament this year, the Minister for Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, told members of parliament that the Ministry did not have money to deploy medical interns for internships. She also said that the Ministry of Finance only allocated sh8 billion of the required sh80 billion for pre-medical interns, making it hard for the ministry to deploy them unless they are sure the rest of the money will be available.

Aceng revealed that the Ministry would need about sh80 billion to be able to deploy medical interns.

"For 1901 interns, we required sh80.4 billion to deploy them, and out of that money, we gave us sh8 billion for interns and sh2 billion for senior house officers. So, we are not able to deploy interns until we are sure that the sh80.4b will be provided," she said.

Aceng also clarified during plenary that the sh22 billion the Ministry of Health received was not meant for pre-medical interns but rather to pay arrears for the 935 medical interns who completed

"The sh22 billion the Ministry of Health received is not for the deployment of the 1901 pre-medical interns but rather to pay the arrears of the 935 interns who completed internships in April this year," she clarified.
