Jacqueline Mbabazi, the wife of former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, has officially declared her intention to run for the Western Region Elderly Representative seat in Parliament.

Her decision, she says, comes after witnessing the marginalisation of elderly people, particularly in her home district of Kanungu, Western Uganda, which inspired her to stand for election.

Mrs Mbabazi expressed her commitment to advocating for the empowerment of elderly Ugandans, and the need to protect their rights and improve their living conditions.

"The elderly in Western Uganda are facing numerous challenges, from losing land to land grabbers to lacking access to basic services. This needs to change," she said.

Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, is currently representing the country at the BRICS Foreign Minister's Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which kicked off on Monday, April 28 and ends today, April 29.
The two leaders shared perspectives on key bilateral and international matters of mutual interest.

Championing Elderly Rights and Empowerment

One of Mrs Mbabazi’s key priorities is to ensure that the elderly are economically empowered and that their property rights are well-represented in Parliament.

"Elderly people are often overlooked when it comes to healthcare access. I am committed to advocating for health insurance that benefits them," she said.

She also plans to encourage the formation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOS) to help elderly people access government funding and improve their livelihoods.

At the age of 70, Jacqueline Mbabazi intends to leverage her extensive government experience to advocate for the elderly.

Currently, Canon Joram Tibasiimwa is the Member of Parliament for the elderly in the western region.

Mrs Mbabazi aims to continue this vital work, tackling the universal challenges faced by elderly persons, particularly in Uganda.

A Life Dedicated to Public Service

Mrs Mbabazi’s career in public service began at the Uganda Revenue Authority, where she worked as the Commissioner for Customs and Excise Duty.

She later joined the National Development Agency, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to empowering youth and women.

Additionally, she served as the chairperson of the Women’s League in the National Resistance Movement party and later became the Managing Director of Luwero Industries Ltd, a government-owned manufacturing company.
