Elizabeth Bagaya, the current Miss Uganda representing the nation in the finale and will be up against 97 other contestants from different countries. During her send off party in Fort Portal last month, the 26-year-old Elizabeth promised to do her best in San Juan.
The highest a Ugandan has scored in this Miss World pageant was in 2018, when the then Miss Uganda, Quiin Abenakyo, she came in fourth place and was crowned Miss World Africa.
Minister of State for Tourism, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, called upon Ugandans to donate to a fundraiser that would enable Bagaya travel to Puerto Rico while speaking at the Uganda Media Centre early last month.
“Recently, we had Quiin Abenakyo [Miss Uganda 2018] carry the crown as the best in Africa and I have heard Bagaya is already ranking in top 10, so we are sure she can bring the crown home,” Martin said.
Elizabeth set foot in Puerto Rico two weeks ago, after finally securing a travel visa, just a day to the deadline of arrival for all contestants.
During her showcase, Elizabeth flaunted Uganda’s physical features like the River Nile, mountain gorillas and rich culture, demonstrating what makes us the Pearl of Africa.
It should be noted that Miss World is the oldest-running international beauty pageant that was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951.When he died in 2000, Morley's widow, Julia Morley, took over the pageant.
As the finale goes on, best of luck to our very own Elizabeth.
