Former presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi preached about gender inequality during his nieces dowry ceremony on Saturday.
Andile Ramaphosa, the son of South Africa's president Cyril Ramaphosa, together with some of his family members visited the home of the former Prime Minister, to officially deliver a marriage proposal to his niece, Bridget Rwakairu Birungi.
Media had reported that Ramaphosa's family was expected to offer a dowry price worth 100 cows.
Mr. Mbabazi used his moment to preach against the gender inequality gap caused by dowry price saying "resources used to raise children can't be equated to animals and invaluable".
He reiterated that "women shouldn't be for sell" and should be accorded with "equal dignity as men".
"Bride wealth dehumanises women in addition to causing instability in families," he added.
Mbabazi's family spokesperson told Ramaphosa's family that "dowry or bride wealth" shouldn't be discussed since their daughter is not for sale.
He urged the family to instead gift the bride's family -- Andile and his fiancée were given five cows while Ms. Birungi's aunties and uncles were given five goats.
