UPDF hunts Congolese rebels behind Monday’s ambush

At least two Uganda soldiers were shot and injured in the ambush according to the UPDF.

These were part of the Ugandan Contingent (UGACON) logistics convoy which was en-route to Bunagana.

The attack reportedly happened at around 10 am on Monday morning

Capt. Ahmed Hassan Kato, the UGACON Spokesperson told Pulse News that the Ugandan convoy was nonetheless able to shake off the ambush and carry on to Bunagana.

Kato also confirmed reports that the two Uganda peacekeepers sustained injuries to their heads, but described their gravity as “minor.”

It was earlier reported that both casualties had bullets still lodged in their heads as they were rushed to Kisoro Hospital for treatment.

“Investigations have started to ascertain which Armed Militia Men were behind the attack on the peacekeepers,” said the UGACON mouthpiece..

“We condemn such a cowardly act on the peacekeepers and we also warn that such attacks must stop with immediate effect otherwise, the EACRF Mandate gives the peacekeepers the powers to fight back in self-defense.

"UGACON affirms Its total commitment to the people of DRC that it will not get derailed from achieving the mandate of EACRF together with the DRC Community at large."

The East African Regional Force was deployed by the regional leaders in Eastern DRC at the start of this year to facilitate the disarmament of the various militia groups operating in this region.

The M23, the biggest rebel outfit in Eastern DRC has since ceded some of the territories it controlled to the regional force.
