Several shops have been closed and streets deserted in the CBD as security operatives fire tear gas and live bullets to disperse protesters.

There are reports that Reuter's photojournalist Andrew Akena has been "badly beaten"by military police while covering protests downtown Kampala.

Anti-riot police have deployed heavily to quell the protests which have intensified in the capital city of a country whose 73-year-old president was given a green light by court to contest again in 2021.

It's exactly a week since Bobi Wine was arrested while campaigning for his colleague Kassiano Wadri in Arua, northern Uganda.

He is currently held at a military facility in Makindye where he is undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained during the arrest.

Legislators on the Parliamentary Defense Committee visited the Kyadondo East MP and said he is healthy -- he can sit and talk -- contrary to earlier reports by his family that "we were almost losing him" due to broken bones and internal bleeding.

Uganda's army said it will ensure that Bobi Wine receives adequate attention and care under its safe custody and his family will be allowed to see him.
