House Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa struggled to contain furious MPs as he sought to handle another “urgent” budgetary item, before he could allow debate on the arrest incident.

In his brief communication, Tayebwa made a stern condemnation of the arrest of the MPs who were picked up by police while marching to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The women, all dressed in black were protesting against the recent brutal arrests of their colleagues who attempted to hold belated Women’s Day celebrations in their constituencies.

The most recent victim was Buvuma District Woman MP Susan Mugabi, who was violently arrested on April 21st, and is still hospitalized.

At the Parliament gate today, Police rounded up the protesters and forced them into a waiting “drone” van.

Several of them were reportedly injured according to Speaker Tayebwa, as police beat up and used pepper spray on them.

They were brutally arrested in a very extreme and demeaning way; some are bleeding, others their clothes were torn; (it’s) like they were arresting terrorists,” he said.

“And you shamelessly do it at the gates of parliament! I don’t know if we are safe…if people can be picked at the gate and beaten.”

Tayebwa went on to theorize that the police officers were possibly working for “an invisible hand” that doesn’t have government’s best interests at heart.

I don’t know, who are these people working for? I don’t think that these people are working to protect government or the promote the image of government. They must be working for an invisible hand aimed at bringing down the government,” he said.

Tayebwa had earlier on Tuesday summoned Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to make a statement on the matter on Tuesday next week.
