Police claim they found 14 boxes of classified government drugs at journalist Solomon Sserwanja's home
Police have issued a statement following the arrest of BBC journalists and wife of NBS TV's investigative journalist Solomon Sserwanja.
The police spokesperson Patrick Onyango told local media on Thursday that they conducted a search at Sserwanja's home last night and found classified government drugs at his home, including 14 boxes of Hepatitis B vaccine.
Onyango confirmed that Sserwanja's wife, Kassim Mohammed, Bandebye Godfrey, Rashid Kaweesa and a driver are in detention. He adds that the NBS TV investigative journalist is still a wanted person to tell authorities how government drugs ended up at his home.
"Mrs Serwanjja was brought to police to record a statement. We are looking for Serwanjja to help us understand how government drugs ended up at his home."
He says authorities are aware that the journalists were working on an investigative story about the illegal sale of government medicine but they should have inform the police.
"Police is aware that they are journalists. If they were investigating the theft of drugs, the government is interested. They should have approached us; then they'd have had our backup."
The five people are being detained on charges of illegal possession on unclassified drugs contrary to National Drug Authority.
