Veteran journalist Tony Owana has quit national broadcaster Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) amid row with new manager.

He has been working with UBC for the last seven years until his contract expired two months ago.

Owana has joined Vision Group as a senior producer and will give the media house's programming 'a historical context'.

He claims that Nada Andersen, the new UBC manager, said he was "too old to appear on TV" and his "appearance wasn't attractive to young people".

In a recorded phone conversation that went viral in April, Andersen said "nobody wants to listen to an old big fat talking shit for one hour. How can I explain to a teenager to listen and watch a person like Owana".

"Everyone thinks I'm too old because of my grey hair, but I'm still strong. I didn't have to resign, my contract expired two months ago and I decided not to seek renewal," Owana told state owned newspaper, The New Vision

The Industrial Area based media house has four TV stations; Bukedde TV1, Bukedde 2, Urban TV and TV West.

He was UBC TV's head of library and archives but he had also previously worked as a producer.

The national broadcaster has been going under a restructuring process to see it compete with other leading TV stations in the country.
