No smoking in public places after move to make Kampala smoke free

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has banned smoking in public places in a move aimed at implementing the Tobacco Control Act, 2015.

The authority's Acting Director Public Health and Environment said during the launch of "let's make Kampala smoke free" campaign that over 30% of deaths reported in Kampala are caused by non-communicable diseases, including smoking.

The act seeks to regulate the consumption of tobacco and its products, and also promote the healthy living.

These public places including roads, workplaces, bars, restaurants, schools and hotels.

Defaulters risk being jailed for six months or fined UGX200,000 (about $55) -- or both.

Tobacco Control Act, 2015, also prohibits any form of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

Crackdown

Last year, KCCA launched an operation against Shisha smoking in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

The authority was helped by police officers to raid popular Kampala hangouts arresting smokers.

Over 30 people were arrested during the operation and were not arraigned before courts of law.
