Museveni to meet Russia’s Putin in July
The President who was being interviewed by the television’s deputy director Mikhial Gusman said relations between Russia and Uganda are in a good state after interruptions in early 1990s.
“Our relations with Russia are excellent. We only had interruptions after Gorbachev, which was a time of instability in Russia, when we were not communicating. But then, His Excellence Vladimir Putin stabilised the situation and we resumed,” he said.
He added: “I will be coming to Russia for the second Russia-Africa summit and Uganda looks forward to working with Russia on a number of things.”
Museveni also talked about the need for Africa, most especially the East African Community, to have a common market for purposes of economic growth and development.
“Modern life is supported by production of goods and services. Once you produce a good or service, you need a market to sell it. Somebody should buy what you produce. The more people buy from you, the better. We have formed the Est African Community with 300 million people. There is also another group called Common Market for South Africa with more than 600 million people,” he said.
Museveni’s revelation comes at the backdrop of the on-going Russia-Ukraine war that has come to year now.
Russia has on several occasions rallied African countries to support its cause in Ukraine, a move international relations experts and observers said was aimed at avoiding isolation given the western economic sanctions.
