Ugandas President Kaguta Museveni has questioned the existence of a sugar bond in the country.

The 73-year-old leader issued a letter to the country's Prime Minister to explain how the "foreign and subsidized sugar" came into the country.

Museveni says the neighbouring countries will start to question Uganda's capacity to produce sugar since it's allowing a "sugar bond in her territory".

"Uganda is the only East African country with surplus sugar of about 80,000 tonnes per annum. All other East African countries have perennial sugar deficits. The neighbouring countries, however, are, apparently, sceptical of Uganda's capacity because it has allowed a "Sugar Bond" in her territory," he wrote.

Concern

In a letter dated August 19th, the Ugandan president since 1986, demands to know if Cabinet was involved in the decision to allow operation of a sugar bond.

"Was a paper brought to Cabinet to allow a self-undermining policy of being the promoters of imported sugar while out own sugar industry was recovering?" he asks.

Immediate closure

Museveni has asked the Prime Minister to ensure the immediate closure of the sugar bond in Uganda.

He also directed the Prime Minister to find out which "authorised geniuses" are operating the sugar body and who allowed them.
