A student at Makerere University has petitioned police to investigate how Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo was awarded a 'fake degree'.

Her graduation sparked controversy when some students alleged that she had failed some exams.

David Musiri now wants the police authorities to investigate how officials at Uganda's oldest university conferred a degree to the beauty queen.

He wants Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) to investigate the alleged illegal activities by Makerere VC Barnabas Nawangwe.

According to the petition, Musiri points out the issuance of fake degrees, diverting money meant for bursaries and corruption among others.

"About the degree that was offered to Quiin Abenakyo, I want and I have instructed the director CID, to also investigate deeply into that degree of Quinn Abenakyo. They should come with clarity and tell us whether they have given Quinn Abenakyo this as an award or as a fake degree."

"I have also received numerous reports from concerned students that the vice chancellor and his personal assistant Gordon Mulangira usually facilitate the grant of fake marks and fake degrees to select students from privileged backgrounds. They also abuse their power to manipulate marks for certain students who deem critical of their administration or otherwise unwanted. There are many victims of this syndicate whom I shall disclose to you. Please investigate this syndicate".

On August 20th, Abenakyo reportedly wrote to the principal Makerere University Business School (MUBS) requesting to retake her 'financial management' paper when she returns from Miss World contest in China.

"I would wish to retake this examination so that I graduate. I gather that the graduation ceremony will take place on January 18th, please allow me to retake the paper and graduate," URN quotes Abenakyo.

The MUBS principal, in response to Abenakyo's request, reportedly wrote to Nawangwe seeking authorisation to sit a special examination as 'a contribution of the institution in enabling her to pursue her career'.

Over 13,000 students graduated at the 69th graduation ceremony at Makerere University in January.
