MC in Freedom city stampede arrested in Mityana
The suspect, Elvis Francis Jjuuko was tracked to Mityana were he had fled to hide after the tragic night according to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango.
Jjuuko is in police custody in Katwe and is facing charges similar to the event organiser.
“He has been brought back to Kampala and is right now detained at Katwe Police station. He is charged with rash and negligent acts,” Onyango said.
The arrest comes days after events promoter Abbey Musinguzi alias Abitex appeared in the magistrates court in Makindye for negligence that cost 10 people their lives including children.
He was remanded to Luzira prison.
Investigations in the incident are still on-going for a comprehensive accountability for what transpired the night of the incident.
At the moment, Police say negligence on the side of the organisers was the major cause in the incident.
The lack of coordination between the organisers and MC resulted in people suffocating and dying when the large crowd could only access one entry point the other four having been closed.
In the rush to get out to watch fireworks to usher in the new year, unfortunately, 10 people died. Even at the only exit/entry point, it is alleged that the man supervising the traffic at that point, closed the gate when the surge started leaving many trapped.
According to police, the incident was sparked by the MC telling over 7,000 people to vacate the venue at once in a building that had one exit point at that moment.
The two culprits, Jjuuko and Musinguzi are the only ones arrested since but investigations continue.
