The Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, while flagging off the ambulances to the city divisions at City Hall, asked Government to procure more seventy ambulances saying the existing twelve are not enough given the population.
He also called for a mobile clinic to provide emergency health services to Kampala residents.
Lukwago asked city mayors to ensure these ambulances provide quick and emergency services to those in need without discrimination, further urging them to take good care of the vehicles.
He further called for accountability from the technical wing of KCCA to establish why each ambulance was procured at sh230m yet they budgeted them to cost sh150m each.
There have been several concerns over service delivery in the City. The concerns range from poor health services, a poor road network, the ever-deteriorating security among others.
Last week, Lukwago raised concerns about the inflated cost of road construction in Kampala saying investigations need to be conducted to ascertain why some roads don’t look like what they cost.
“They are telling you that each kilometer of that narrow stretch, more like a paved footpath with no trees on the sides and dim street lights costs UGX 10 billion” he said, adding, “Kabuusu - Bunamwaya - Lweza road is 8km but it cost UGX 93 billion, before you even talk about the Auditor General, as a layperson, is that road worth UGX 93 million?”
Kampala, Uganda’s capital, is made of 5 divisions each with an elective mayor. These divisions include: Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Rubaga Division, Makindye Division and Nakawa Division.
