How much do you know about Eid? The Muslims in Kenya and other parts of the world have been observing the Holy Month of Ramadan which is almost coming to an end.
Like the Christians long for the Christmas holiday, so do the Muslims long for Eid-al-Fitr which is the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. Contrary to the belief of many that this holiday is just about feasting, there is much more than you probably thought.
As we approach Eid, allow us to educate you about some interesting facts about this holiday:
1. It only begins after the new moon has been observed
Ever wondered why Eid is celebrated different times every year? It’s because the Islamic calendar is lunar and they cannot celebrate Eid until they see the new moon. This means that different parts of the world celebrate the holiday at slightly different dates.
2. They put on new outfits
The new outfits are a symbol of honor to Allah as well as spiritual renewal.

4. It’s not just about eating
Although food plays an important role after the long period of fasting, Eid is also a day to remember the loved ones who are long gone. On this day, they visit the gravesites of the deceased, pray for them and clean the site. It’s also a day to remember the less fortunate in society and show kindness to them.

This is a common saying you will hear during Eid. It literally means “Happy Eid”.

The day kicks off at the mosque where the Muslims gather to thank God for Eid and ask him to accept their Ramadan sacrifice.
7. It’s not a one-day thing
Unlike most holidays that only last for a day, Eid lasts for three days or even four in some countries.
