I asked ChatGPT to name top Ugandan musicians, here is the response
While writing is not among the top endangered, this reporter tested the AI-powered bot to see if it has a chance at eliminating some stages in the writing process.
The first task this reporter gave ChatGPT was to name "top Ugandan musicians in 2023."
The response: "As an AI language model, I don't have access to current events or up-to-date information beyond my knowledge cutoff of 2021. However, I can provide you with a list of some of the most popular Ugandan musicians as of 2021:
"Eddy Kenzo, Sheebah Karungi, Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone, Bobi Wine, Vinka, Fik Fameica, Cindy Sanyu, Gravity Omutujju, Spice Diana. [The commas and period were added by this reporter. The bot presented the information in vertical format.] It's possible that some of these artists are still popular in 2023, but it's also possible that the Ugandan music scene has changed since then."
As seen from the response, ChatGPT's data is currently still limited to 2021, and it's also limited to the biases of its creator because on questions that are sensitive, for instance, gender and political issues, it will give plausible-sounding responses that make no practical sense.
When this reporter asked ChatGPT to name the "best Ugandan songs", the response was:
"There are many great Ugandan songs out there, but here are some popular ones that you may enjoy: 'Tubonga Nawe' by Various Artists - This song was created to support President Yoweri Museveni's campaign during the 2016 Ugandan presidential election. It features a number of popular Ugandan musicians, including Bebe Cool, Juliana Kanyomozi, and Jose Chameleone.
"Sitya Loss by Eddy Kenzo - This song became a viral sensation in 2014, thanks in large part to a dance video featuring a group of Ugandan children. It's an upbeat song with a catchy chorus and a mix of English and Luganda lyrics. 'Malaika' by Radio & Weasel - This is a beautiful love song that has become a classic in Uganda. It's a slow ballad with a simple melody and heartfelt lyrics that express deep love and admiration.
"'Nkwatako' by Sheebah Karungi - This is a danceable and upbeat song with a catchy chorus that encourages people to let loose and enjoy themselves. The lyrics are in Luganda and English, making it accessible to a wide audience. 'Tuliyambala Engule' by Bobi Wine - This is a political song that has become an anthem for the Ugandan opposition. The lyrics are a call to action for Ugandans to stand up and fight for their rights and freedoms, and the melody is based on a traditional hymn. These are just a few examples of great Ugandan songs. There are many other talented musicians and artists in Uganda, so there's always more to explore!"
