Experts forecast a dry spell until the end of August

The Authority said in a statement released this week that the month of June marked the end of the first rainfall season and the beginning of the harvest period for seasonal crops across the country.

"The season of June, July, and August is generally a dry spell over the southern parts of the country, especially in the south-western, central, Lake Victoria basin, and parts of the eastern region," the statement read in part.

It further read: "It also marks the end of the first rainfall season and a harvesting period for seasonal crops across the country. There is a likelihood of near normal with a tendency to below normal over most parts of the country."

According to a report released by UNMA, central and western Uganda will experience dry conditions characterised by isolated rainfall until mid-June, which will be followed by light rainfall until mid-August.

In the eastern districts of Iganga, Bugweri, Butaleja, Bugweri, Luuka, Namutumba, Buyende, and Kaliro, a dry spell with light rains that is being experienced will go up to late June, and thereafter heavy rains and thunderstorms characterised by dry spells will continue until late August.

The Northern region has experienced a reduction in rainfall, which will continue till mid-June and thereafter moderate rains until late August.

Most of the other parts of the country, according to UNMA, will experience dry spells until the end of the forecast period (August).
