Engola's son elected NRM flag bearer for Oyam North
Engola Okello received 532 votes, or 62.3 percent of the total votes cast, defeating Queen Dorothy Amolo, who received 322 votes, according to Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission.
Three candidates, Tony Adonyo, Alinaitwe Henry, and Daniel Obala, withdrew from the race before the election, despite the fact that ten had previously showed interest in running.
A lengthy closed-door discussion with all seven of the remaining candidates was held earlier on Saturday. As a result, four of them decided to withdraw and lend their support to Engola Okello, and one decided to boycott the election.
Toby Omodo Omodo, who decided to abstain from voting, claimed that the NRM party has always treated him unfairly and that this election was not conducted in a free and fair manner.
Queen Amolo refused to resign, forcing the party to hold elections between the two surviving candidates while the others withdrew their support.
Amolo told the media shortly after the announcement that she would now run as an independent candidate and said that the entire election process was corrupt.
However, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong admonished her against making the move, claiming that Amolo would be dishonouring the party, which is well-represented in Oyam.
The NRM carders in Oyam were given the job of remaining unified and working to ensure the party's victory by Denis Hamson Obua, the Government Chief Whip and MP for Ajuri county.
Nominations for the Oyam North by-election will be accepted between Monday, June 19, and Tuesday, June 20, according to the Uganda Electoral Commission's road map.
After Charles Engola, a member of parliament, was fatally shot by his bodyguard on May 2, the position became vacant.
