Mao, who made the remarks during the handover of 42 new vehicles to prosecutors at Kololo Airstrip on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, said this would enable the prosecutors to carry out their responsibilities with diligence.

Mao said that there are certain people in Government who coerce prosecutors into dropping cases.

"Some people phone prosecutors, threatening them with calls from the State House. Just tell them to put it in writing on headed paper if they try to interfere with your work under the pretence that they are from State House because they are aware of the consequences of meddling," he said.

In order to prevent outside intervention, he instructed prosecutors to work faster while also keeping a few files on their desk.

Mao added, "Make recommendations to the DPP as soon as a file arrives on your desk, and if someone approaches you, let them know that you have already transmitted the file. Why should you have so many files on your desk if you work in the registry? Having too many files is one of the things that gives people a negative reputation."

The minister urged all recipients of the vehicles to always get permission before using their vehicles for non-official purposes.

"Keep the undersecretary informed of your movements with the vehicle at all times to avoid being caught off guard. She is aware that you are mortal beings who must attend funerals and other social gatherings when individuals pass away," he further stated.

Mao also said that the Uganda Police Force's budget needs to be increased because it is the primary reason that some criminal charges have not been successfully prosecuted. The police are essential to case management.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Lady Justice Frances Abodo, disclosed that the top management team had given these vehicles careful consideration before they were distributed.

In the meantime, those with permits should seek authorisation to drive from the undersecretary, as we need to get some funding to provide you with drivers.

Abodo also expressed her gratitude to the Minister for always making time to assist her office, wherever he was needed.
