In a statement issued on Thursday, the archbishop of the Church of Uganda His Grace Stanley Ntagali said the church condemns the proposed beauty contest.

He believes the contest undermines the dignity of women and all the church has worked to advance girl-child education and opportunities for women.

He added that the contest brings shame to families and the whole country.

During the launch of the contest, Uganda's tourism minister added 'curvy and sexy Ugandan women' to the list of Uganda's tourist attraction.

"We have naturally endowed nice looking women that are amazing to look at. Why don’t we use these people as a strategy to promote our tourism industry?"

Kiwanda Godfrey's statements have sparked criticism on social media as women rights activists call for his resignation.

An online petition has been launched to cancel the contest saying it objectifies and degrades women.
