Emerging reports indicate that the traders are demonstrating against harassment by city council askaris and the arrest of their chairman.

The demo has caused a huge traffic snarl as the traders have barricaded the road with burning tyres.

Vehicles plying on the route are also being stoned and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

The early morning protest saw the angry demonstrators enter into running battles with police who lobbed tear gas to disperse them.
