2020/21 elections: Over 1.5 million candidates to run for elective positions
At least 1,539,861 candidates will run for elective positions in the next general elections.
The Uganda Electoral Commission (UEC) revealed during the launch of the strategic plan and roadmap for the 2020/2021 elections.
The record number is a huge shift compared to the number of elective position in 2016 -- 1,351,355.
The elections expected to take place between 10th January and 8th February 2021 will cost about UGX868bn.
This is exclusive of operations costs, wage bill, capital development, general operations among others.
UEC projects the number of registered voters for the next election at 19,400,00 compared to 15,277,198 voters in 2015/16.
Nominations for elective positions are expected to end in the third quarter of 2020.
The chairperson of the country's electoral body on Tuesday said the roadmap will help the government achieve better planning, transparency and swift implementation.
