Kyabazinga, Mutesi say I do; Church reveals powerful lawyers, judges who made it possible

At about 15 minutes to 1 pm, Saturday, November 18th, Busoga King Wilberforce Nadiope and Jovia Mutesi took to the pulpit to say their martial vows.

The Kyabazinga William Nadiope Gabule and Queen Jovia Mutesi were wedded by Archbishop Stephen Kiziimba Mugalu

In front of over 2000 guests who parked two large marquees at Christ Church Cathedral Bugembe, and millions watching live around the country, the two vowed to love, comfort and be faithful to one another, in sickness and in health for as long as they shall live.

The wedding function started nearly two hours behind schedule, as the motorcades of both the bride and groom had to snake through thousands of elated subjects that lined the roads from Budhumbula and Mayuge to the church respectively.

At the Cathedral, they were welcomed amid ecstatic ululations, music and dance.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Eminence Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, was the main celebrant and administered the marriage vows to the King and his Queen.

In his sermon, Kaziimba thanked an eminent team of legal minds who worked together to bury the threat from a UK-based woman who claimed to have been married and had children with the King.

This team, he said included lawyers from Busog Kingdom, the Church of Uganda, two senior judges and even top government officials.

I want to appreciate the legal team that guided us in this matter led by the provincial chancellor of the Church of Uganda, Naboth Muhairwe and Emmanuel Bamwite,” he said

I thank you for leading us well because there were certain things we had to look at from the spiritual, theological and legal point of view,” he said

Other legal minds that helped in this matter, he said included Senior Resident Judge, Justice David Batema at Iganga High Court, and Justice Duncan Gaswaga, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Aggrey Kibenge.

Last week, Archbishop Kaziimba dismissed a petition filed by one Alison Anna Gabula, who wanted to have the royal wedding cancelled.

Kaziimba said the petitioner failed to bring evidence to the effect that she wedded Kyabazinga in December 2016 in Portsmouth, England.

The Church wedding today was graced among others by the Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda Luswata of Buganda as well as Royals from the Kingdoms of Tooro, Bunyoro and others.

The Buganda queen was among those who signed the marriage certificates for the newlyweds.

From the Government, Vice President Jessica Alupo attended along with former Vice Presidents Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, and Specioza Wandera Kazibwe as well as a host of other ministers and leaders.
