National Unity Platform (NUP) President Bobi Wine has revealed that the party’s mission is not centred purely on seizing the presidency but on empowering leadership from the grassroots level.

Speaking to party leaders in the Eastern Region on Monday, Bobi Wined charged them to prepare to contest at all levels to shore up the party’s standing in the next term.

In the meeting held in Mbale City, he reflected on the struggles of the past and outlined the party’s strategic focus as the country prepares for the 2026 elections.

Bobi Wine reflected on the 2021 election, where he claimed that although the party had adequately prepared and was confident of winning, their victory was stolen.

"We are supposed to be in government, but they relegated us to the opposition," he said

But despite the setbacks, he said, NUP has made great strides in strengthening its structures.

"We are not where we are supposed to be, but we are also not where we used to be," he said.

“Every day, we continue to weaken this regime through consistent organising and mobilisation.

Focus is not presidency

The NUP President elaborated to the leaders that the party’s vision is not about taking over the presidency to replace one regime with another.

“Our mission is not about taking over the presidency because we do not intend to operate from top to bottom,” Bobi Wine explained.

“Even if we were to win the presidency, we could not do anything if we don’t have leadership from the ground. We want to work from down upwards," he said

He stressed the importance of building leadership from the bottom up, starting with the village level (LC1).

He believes that even if the party were to win the presidency, it would not be effective without strong local leadership in place.

Even at a personal level, Bobi Wine said he is not in a hurry to be President of Uganda.

I am not dying to be president. I have lived most of my life as the (ghetto) president. After that, you elected me president of Uganda. Indeed, everywhere I go, here and around the world, I am treated like a president. For me, it’s not about the title. Our mission is to build a new Uganda,

Leadership, Trust, and the Future of Uganda

Bobi Wine called on party leaders and citizens, regardless of their status, to step up and run for office.

"Do not shy away from running for office," he urged, adding that the party was fortunate to have a wealth of potential candidates.

However, he emphasised the need for the party to select the very best and most trustworthy individuals to represent it.
