Shaka Ssali to be cremated, ashes sent to different countries

Veteran journalist Shaka Ssali’s remains will be cremated, with his ashes being sent to Uganda and other African countries, as per his final wish.

Veteran journalist Shaka Ssali’s remains will be cremated, with his ashes being sent to Uganda and other African countries, as per his final wish.

Sudhir Byaruhanga, a relative and NTV journalist, shared the news on X, stating, “He had requested to be cremated and his ashes sent back home and to other countries in Africa.”

The family will respect his wish, and details of his sendoff service in Washington DC and Uganda will be announced soon.

"We shall respect his wish, and soon, a date for his sendoff service in Washington DC and Uganda will be communicated. #RIPShakaSsali," Byaruhanga wrote.

Ssali, who was the long-time host of VOA’s Straight Talk Africa, passed away at 71, just two weeks before his 72nd birthday. For over 20 years, he hosted the show, conducting thought-provoking interviews with African leaders, analysts, and citizens on crucial issues like democracy, governance, and development.

His dedication to press freedom and unique interviewing style earned him respect across the continent and beyond.

Born in Kabale, Uganda, Shaka Ssali was passionate about truth and accountability. His work inspired countless African youth and contributed to shaping conversations around the continent’s most pressing issues.

Family, friends, and the millions who followed his broadcasts will mourn his passing. However, his legacy in African journalism and public discourse will continue to shape conversations for years to come.

Ssali’s journey as a journalist began at VOA, where he co-hosted Africa World Tonight, before taking charge of Straight Talk Africa in 2000.
