In a petition to the Police Director of Traffic Lawrence Nuwabiine, the Force was called upon to crack the whip on drivers who remove mufflers from their vehicles, a practice common with Subaru drivers.

The petition was penned on Friday by one Innocent Ainebyoona, a concerned citizen.

This is to complain to you against noise pollution by Motor vehicle operators which contravenes the provision of Article 39 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda which is to the effect that every Ugandan has a right to a clean and healthy environment,” he wrote.

Several incidents of loud, excessive and disruptive noise from among others the Subaru motor vehicles have been noticed, not only during the day but also during the night. It should be noted that almost all motor vehicles are made to be very quiet and that it is the operators who swap them with aftermarket mufflers with the intention of amplifying noise.

Forester Nation

Drivers of Subaru motor vehicles have gained notoriety in Uganda for both good and bad reasons.

These have an association called the “Forester Nation” through which they carry out philanthropic activities.

However, the drivers have been heavily criticised in equal measure for reckless driving and engaging other road users during their convoy drives to different places in Uganda and to neighbouring countries.

In his petition copied to NEMA and KCCA, Ainebyoona appealed to the Police to take “necessary action to mitigate the noise pollution and restore peace and quiet to the public.

“I request that you take immediate action to resolve this matter and prevent any further disturbance to the public,” he added.
