Juliana Kagwa named Uganda Tourism Board CEO

Juliana Kagwa has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB).

She replaces Lilly Ajarova, who took up a new role as senior presidential advisor after serving as CEO since January 10, 2019.

Before joining UTB, Kagwa was Group Sales Marketing Director at Seed Co Group, a South African company. Prior to that, she was Director of Corporate Relations at Diageo.

The UTB advertised the CEO position in January, seeking a highly qualified candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism, Economics, Business Administration, or related fields. Applicants needed at least seven years of experience in tourism, hospitality, or marketing, with proven senior management skills.

The ideal CEO would have broad knowledge of tourism, including marketing, product development, and working with stakeholders. Leadership, strategic thinking, and a focus on results were key requirements.

Based at the UTB headquarters in Kampala, the CEO reports to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities include overseeing the Deputy CEO, managers, and the Senior Internal Auditor.

The role involves implementing the Strategic Plan, promoting Uganda as a tourist destination, building partnerships, managing finances and procurement, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

The position demands frequent travel, long working hours, and dedication to UTB’s mission of sustainably growing Uganda’s tourism sector.

Juliana Kagwa has an extensive career in marketing and management, having worked as Marketing Director at Uganda Breweries Limited, Country Manager at Heineken, Marketing and Brand Manager at East African Breweries Limited, and Media Representative at GlaxoSmithKline.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology from Makerere University, and two Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University.
