Traffic Police are urging drivers travelling out of Kampala to consider alternative routes to ease the worsening traffic jam.

Roads exiting the city have been experiencing extreme congestion as thousands rush upcountry for the Christmas holidays.

The western and eastern routes have seen the worst traffic, especially on the Busega-Kyengera and Nakawa-Mukono stretches respectively.

Ongoing roadworks along Mabira forest have exacerbated traffic on the eastern route.

Other routes

ASP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety yesterday urged drivers to consider alternative routes out of the city.

Those on the Western Route (Kampala to Western Uganda) were urged to use the Nakawuka – Kasanje – Mpigi route to bypass traffic congestion.

These too can use Buloba and connect to Mpigi.

Those on the Eastern Route (Kampala to Eastern Uganda) were urged to use Wantoni in Mukono to Kisoga through Nyenga to connect to Jinja.

Avoid using the main route due to ongoing construction if possible,” Kananura urged.

“The alternative routes are suitable for light vehicles, as heavy vehicles are advised to use the main routes to minimise congestion," added Kananura.

"By following these guidelines, we aim to reduce traffic congestion and ensure a smoother journey for all motorists during the festive season."
