Edward Olumola, the hotel's general manager, shared that the festival was inspired by guests' consistent demand for healthy, local food. "We really want to connect with the spirit and soul of our guests," Olumola said, highlighting the hotel's commitment to setting itself apart in Uganda’s hospitality scene.

The festival’s debut on Independence Day wasn’t just a coincidence; it was a deliberate move. The hotel adopted a quasi-farm-to-fork approach, sourcing food directly from local farmers.

Hotel chefs collaborated with the community to prepare dishes, ensuring an authentic experience. "We recognise that different cultures consume food differently," Olumola explained, emphasising the importance of preserving the unique food practices of Uganda’s regions.

He even referred to the festival as "an anthropological study," adding depth to the event’s cultural significance.

Looking ahead

Olumola revealed that the festival was only the beginning. Moving forward, the hotel will promote local food every Wednesday, culminating in a food festival at the end of each month. These festivals will also blend food and music, with regional-themed nights headlined by musicians from various Ugandan regions.

During the debut festival, a variety of regional dishes were served, including Malakwang, Malewa, Matooke, and Eshabwe, along with a selection of raw foods. "It's like a museum of food," Olumola remarked, noting the broad appeal of the event.

Families were also catered to, with activities like face painting and a bouncing castle for kids. For couples, the hotel’s spa offered special discounts on treatments like massages, Turkish baths, and facials, making Independence Day celebrations even more indulgent.

Beyond the Food

The Emin Pasha Hotel and Spa isn’t just about culinary delights. The hotel is launching an art residency, offering local artists the chance to display their work in the hotel’s gallery and gift shop. Bigger exhibitions are planned for public holidays, and artists are encouraged to bring in their pieces for sale.
