On February 26, the 2025 Trace Awards & Summit delivered a night of electrifying music, culture, and creativity at Mora Resort in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
As the platinum sponsor, Johnnie Walker played a central role, curating a premium experience that blended the bold spirit of whisky with the energy of Africa’s biggest music celebration.
The event gathered top artists, industry leaders, and cultural icons. South Africa’s Tito & Huppe won Song of the Year for Tswhala Bam, a global dance sensation.
Nigerian star Rema dominated with Album of the Year (Heis) and Male Artist of the Year, while Ivory Coast’s Didi B took home Best Hip-Hop Artist.
The awards also saw Makhadzi crowned Best Dancer, DJ Moh Green named Best DJ, and Diamond Platnumz recognised as Best Global African Artist. South Africa’s Tyla won Best Female Artist, while Congolese icon Fally Ipupa took Best Live Performance.
Rwandan choreographer Sherrie Silver received the Changemaker Award, and Nigerian legend D’Banj was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Beyond the awards, the night celebrated Africa’s booming creative economy, which Johnnie Walker proudly champions.
Through its partnership with Trace, the whisky brand reinforced its commitment to cultural expression and artistic innovation.
Johnnie Walker’s exclusive lounges became the ultimate hub for A-list celebrities and industry powerhouses, offering premium whisky tastings and immersive brand experiences that highlighted the synergy between music and bold progress.
Christine Kyokunda, Johnnie Walker Uganda Brand Manager, spoke on the significance of this partnership: “Music and whisky share a common DNA—both celebrate boldness, creativity, and the pursuit of greatness. Our presence at the Trace Awards wasn’t just about sponsorship; it was about championing the artists who keep walking and pushing boundaries. We are thrilled to have been part of this iconic moment for African music.”
She also expressed gratitude to Joshua Baraka for representing Uganda: “I would have loved to see Joshua win, but his nomination alone speaks volumes about his talent and growing influence. We are incredibly proud of him, and this is just the beginning—the sky is the limit.”
Baraka was nominated for Best East African Artist, an award that went to Kenya’s Bien-Aimé Baraza.
The 2025 Trace Awards not only honoured Africa’s finest musicians but also reaffirmed the continent’s growing global influence. With artists breaking barriers and brands like Johnnie Walker walking alongside them, the future of African music looks even brighter.
