China Town is set to open a new branch at Akamwesi Mall in Kyebando along Gayaza-Kampala Road.
The retail store announced via TikTok that it will open on April 3.
The store, which opened in September 2024, replaced the former Game store and quickly gained attention for its affordable Chinese products.
However, the high demand led to the temporary closure of the store due to large crowds outside, which caused disruptions to other businesses in the busy Lugogo mall.
When it reopened, a variety of products, many of them Ugandan-made, filled the shelves.
This move aligns with a government policy requiring 40% of shelf space to feature locally produced goods, a policy aimed at strengthening the local economy.
While many shoppers have embraced this change, local retailers have raised concerns.
Some argue that the foreign-backed hypermarket threatens their businesses, claiming China Town's competitive prices, made possible by foreign-owned factories and tax incentives, put local shops at a disadvantage.
Despite the concerns, shoppers are drawn to the wide range of affordable products at China Town, making it a popular destination for bargain hunters
