Brad Sherman, a US congressman serving Californias San Fernando Valley, on Thursday met Ugandan lawmaker Bobi Wine and wife Barbie Kyagulanyi.
Sherman met the Ugandan legislator who was allegedly tortured by Ugandan soldiers mid-August in the northern town of Arua.
Bobi Wine is in the US for treatment for the injuries he sustained during his detention in a military facility. Their meeting happened shortly after the 36-year-old Ugandan lawmaker addressed reporters in Washington DC about his condition and what he plans to do next when he returns to the East African nation.
The US congressman took to Twitter and revealed that their meeting pivoted on the "importance of the democratic process" in Uganda and the people "who have and continue to suffer from political oppression".
In August, Sherman used his platform to pressurize the Ugandan government to release Bobi Wine and 32 other people. He wrote a letter to Uganda's Ambassador to the United States.
"I write to call for the immediate release of Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, more commonly known as Bobi Wine, and five other politicians who have recently been imprisoned and tortured under false pretences. I condemn the violence that took place on August 13th as Mr Kyagulanyi was taken into custody, which led to the death of Yasin Kawuma, Mr Kyagulanyi’s driver, along with six civilians in Arua Municipality," Sherman wrote.
He added: "I call for the release of those detained around the country who demonstrated for Mr Kyagulanyi to be discharged from custody."
