United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) official Khamis Ali has been arrested for allegedly sodomizing refugee girls in Kitgum.
Khamis Ali, 65, is attached to Lamwo refugees camp and is now under police custody.
He allegedly sexually molested at least 5 refugee girls in Kitgum District.
Khamis' arrest was confirmed by Kitgum Municipality MP Beatrice Anywar who accused him on sexually harassing refugee camp girls and those at a hotel where he stayed.
Hon. Anywar has urged the government to take the matter of sexual harassment in refugee camps seriously and take action – she says one of the sodomized girls is in critical condition.
“Achan needs urgent health attention as well as psychological help and should be compensated for the damage Khamis has done to her life,” Anywar said.
How Khamis Ali was arrested
A team of investigators from Geneva were sent to Lamwo District to investigate allegations of sexual harassment in camps.
After a fact-finding mission, the team recommended that any UN officer caught in such act of sexual harassment and abuse doesn't have diplomatic immunity and should face the law.
