UN refugee agency UNHCR is investigating allegations of sexual abuse and trafficking of refugee girls reportedly committed by its employees and agents.

This comes after an investigative piece on NTV Uganda which exposed how some UNHCR officials are working with brokers and police officers to sexually abuse and exploit refugee girls as young as 16 years old.

“I can’t give you any details because the investigations are ongoing and we have to wait for the investigations to conclude. We are deeply troubled by the report concerning the allegations regarding a colleague,” UNHCR spokesperson Dunya Aslam Khan said.

Khamis Ali, a UNHCR official attached to Lamwo refugee camp, was arrested on Monday on allegations of molesting and sodomizing young girls at refugee camps in Kitgum.
