President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a delegation to Tanzania to hand over seized gold.

The gold which was allegedly seized from Nairobi will be handed over to President John Magufuli at State House Dar es Salaam.

DCI director George Kinoti, the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji and Attorney General Kihara Kariuki accompanied Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma to Tanzania to return the gold worth Ksh100 million seized at JKIA last year.

In 2018, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) intercepted gold worth Ksh100 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

The gold was alleged to have been in the custody of a 46-year-old Tanzanian man, seized by KRA Customs officers and a team of security agencies attached at the airport.

Gold transportation

At least 32,255.50 grams of gold bars and an accompanying invoice of USD859,890, worth approximately Ksh100 million, were found in his possession after intelligence officials raised alarm.

Officials reported that the man was aboard Precision Airlines from Mwanza via Kilimanjaro and was heading to Dubai on a Kenya Airways flight.

The transportation of the gold was contrary to provisions of the East Africa Community, Customs Management Act 2004 Section 85(3) and Second Schedule Part B(4).

The section restricts the transiting of unwrought precious metals and precious stones across the region.
