Uganda's tax body says viral social media tax notice is fake news

Ugandas tax body, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), has reacted to the viral notice on the recently passed social media tax.

URA made the clarification labelling the notice as "Fake News" while responding to a Twitter user on Wednesday.

The notice claimed that "access to over the Top (OTT) services, including access to social media platforms, will be blocked effective July 1st" and "access will only be granted upon payment of the tax by the customer".

"The taxes can be paid for access for daily (UGX200), weekly )UGX1,400) or monthly (UGX6,000)," part of the notice read.

On May 31st, Parliament passed the controversial taxes on mobile money transaction and social media use where a mandatory UGX200 daily levy for WhatsApp users starting July 1, while mobile money transactions will also attract a 1% levy on the total value of transaction.
