Ugandan MPs are planning to increase their salaries by more than 100% in the next financial year.
The legislators want their monthly basic salaries increased from UGX11m to UGX24m.
The suggestion was detailed in a leaked supplementary request; meaning MPs will need an extra UGX90bn to cater for their salaries.
If their salaries are enhanced in the next financial year, the annual wage bill on MPs basic salaries will increase from UGX39bn to UGX129b.
UGX459b has been projected as Parliamentary Commission for 2018/19 financial year; about UGX86bn is expected to cater for the legislators' salaries.
In 2016, MPs passed the Income Tax Amendment Bill 2016 that exempts them from paying taxes on their allowances.
What Parliament is saying
Parliament has dismissed the reports to increase MPs salaries saying there is no such plan because the legislators are "aware of what the country is going through".
Director of Communication and Public Affairs to privately owned newspaper, Daily Monitor, that he is not aware of such move but "comparatively our MPs feel are paid less and comparatively".
