Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has given telecommunications companies an ultimatum of three months to phase out airtime scratch cards.
This comes after a meeting between telecommunications companies and the communication regulator on 19th March.
UCC and telecommunication operators agreed to phase out use of airtime cards and adopt use of electronic airtime and the telecos were warned against importation of simcards.

Telecommunication operators were give up to June 30th to have finalized sale of airtime scratch cards. They were also tasked to provide to the commission a ‘weighted average period’ to sensitize their vendors about the agreed resolution.
“The telecommunication operator would also provide to the commission a weighted average period in which they would have consumed all scratch cards available on the market and begin to sensitise their registered vendors about the phasing out of scratch cards on the Ugandan market,” part of the statement from UCC reads
Earlier this month, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) banned the sale of simcards by telecommunication agents after complaints that some unregistered simcards are being used by some unscrupulous people to con people and commit crimes.
