Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has warned of dangerous toilet papers on the market which are exposing users to diseases.

Authorities warn that toilet papers which shed a lot of dust cause infection, irritation and cervical cancer, especially to women.

The standards bureau revealed that most toilet papers on the market were below the required standards.

UNBS' research which involved 24 toilet paper brands, including 17 locally produced and 7 imported brands, estimates that 70% of the toilet papers in the country are substandard.

"We have found rough challenges with the quality of paper, whether it's imported or produced in Uganda; they're not meeting the standards," the UNBS deputy ED Ms Patricia Ejalu said.

The bureau has introduced an inspection guideline which will see all products covered by mandatory standards have a distinctive mark to ensure quality standards.

Last year Uganda National Bureau of Standards destroyed 'fake' toilet paper valued at UGX6.4m.
