The Kampala Mobile Money Dealers Association is planning for a mass protest on Thursday against the new mobile money tax which came into effect on July 1st.
The mass peaceful march is intended to rally all mobile money agents and customers countrywide and walk to Parliament in protest of the 1% tax levy on the total mobile money transactions, deposits, withdraws and transfers.
The protesters also want to petition the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga over the same issue.
The mobile money tax came into effect on July 1st as part of some of the taxes approved by Parliament for the 2018/19 financial year after amending the Excise Duty Bill 2018.
The Excise Duty (Amendment) Bill, 2018, was read for the first time on 3rd April 2018 and it proposed that mobile money should be taxed since it's an efficiency gain.
The amendment also proposed a UGX200 daily tax levy on over the top services, including social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter among others -- excluding educational or research sites.
