Police in Kisoro are holding several people in custody, including the groom, after raiding a wedding ceremony at a local church in Nyundo sub county.
The groom, John Asiimwe, 19, was about to exchange matrimonial vows with a 16-year-old girl at Bizenga Catholic Church when police made the raid.
Asiimwe is being held on charges of defilement since it is believed that he was having sexual intercourse with the girl for the last six months.
He reportedly paid UGX1.5m to the parents of the girl as bride price.
The parents of the bride were also arrested and detained on charges of procuring defilement.
Kisoro District Police Commander Hassan Ssekalema confirmed the arrests and said investigations into the matter were on going.
“We are holding Asiimwe on charges of defilement since he has been having sexual intercourse with the girl for six months. The mother is detained on charges of procuring defilement,” he said.
