Pilgrims arrive for Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations amid tight security
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said that so far no incidents of crime or safety concerns have been reported.
He also noted that pilgrims are steadily trekking on foot to Kampala, and the police are ensuring their safety.
According to the PRO, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has instructed all territorial commanders to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims within their jurisdictions.
Pilgrims are being escorted and protected at churches, schools, and community centres where they rest.
Owoyesigyire said that movements are restricted during the night and early morning hours to prevent road accidents and identify those needing medical attention.
Police and Ministry of Health ambulances are deployed on all major highways and at Namugongo for emergency response and medical evacuation.
During the period leading up to Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, pilgrims have been advised to stay with their group and draw strength from the spiritual journey.
Due to unpredictable weather, they have been asked to carry warm clothing, IDs, mobile phones, light bags, and reflectors, and ensure transport arrangements for their return.
Police also advised them to be vigilant in heavy traffic and protect valuables from criminals and fraudsters.
Security is being manned by a comprehensive response unit that includes the bomb squad, counter-terrorism units, Field Force Unit, metallic barriers, UPDF, JIC, UPDAF, SFC, and Police Air Wing.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, these measures are in place to counter any eventualities and ensure the safety of all pilgrims and guests during Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
