NTV journalist 'badly beaten & detained' after arrest in Arua
NTV journalist Herbert Zziwa is currently being detained at Arua Central Police Station after going missing for several hours following clashes between opposition & ruling party supporters on Monday.
Zziwa was arrested together with another correspondent by security operatives in Arua town while covering the last day of Arua Municipality by-election campaigns which turned chaotic.
Security operatives, including the president's special security force, used tear gas and live bullets to disperse crowds -- killing Bobi Wine's driver.
NTV Uganda has issued an update saying they are "engaging the authorities to have them released".
Sudhir Byaruhanga, NTV Uganda's investigative journalist, says "Zziwa and Muwanga were badly beaten and phones confiscated".
He claims that the two were "first tied and then beaten by security operatives".
"Muwanga was kicked in the stomach and was bleeding from the nose and mouth," he states.
Another journalist detained
Samson Baranga from The Observer newspaper was also arrested separately by security operatives.
Reports indicate he was driven to Gulu CPS with other people arrested in the northern town of Arua as they tried to flee police brutality.
