It's the same amendment that lead to the extension of tenure of Parliament and Local Government from five years to seven years.

The amendment of article 102b of the constitution caused a lot of controversy as a huge section of the public and opposition criticized the ruling party MPs for not truthfully representing the views of their constituents.

Nathan Igime Nabeta spoke to a prominent media house explaining why he voted to amend the constitution.

“We have a very young and youthful population in the world. Lifting 102b has empowered young people. Today, you can be an MP at 18 years but you can’t be an LC5 at 18. You can go to Parliament at 18 years and can be elected a Speaker. Why is it that you can be a number 3 in the country but you can’t be an LC5 chairperson of a district? There was a misunderstanding,” he said.

Nabeta is among the 8 candidates vying in the Jinja East by-election after he was nullified from the same parliamentary seat by Court of Appeal in January.

The by-election falls at a complex time when the voters are still enraged over the amendment of article 102b of the constitution by NRM MPs.

Jinja East by-election will be held on 15 March, 2018.
