The fire is said to have started between 3:00 am and 4:30 am from a candle store when most of the factory's casual labourers were leaving after their night shift.

By 8:00 am, the plastic manufacturing plant premises were engulfed in huge flames and smoke could be seen as firefighters attempted to manage the situation.

Fortunately, the night shift casual labourers were unharmed as well as the sodium silicate plants and administration blocks.

The other parts of the premises were not as lucky because of the highly inflammable material used in the manufacture of candles, kaveera (polythene bags) and car tyres. Due to these materials, Police used gas to contain the fire from reaching other units on the premises.

Among those units most affected, are the spare parts store or warehouse and the transport department.

Eyewitnesses who consist mostly of the night shift casual labourers accuse the Police of arriving late at the scene. However, the claims have been disputed by the Police.

According to James Mubi, spokesperson for the Kiira region, fire brigade teams from both the Police and well-wishers contained the fire from spreading throughout the factory premises.

Proprietors of factories have been encouraged to have water hydrants for easy access to water in such cases. This is to readily supply firefighters with water since it can be challenging to get it from the Central Police Station.
